Vegetarian Indian cooking is a fantastic and fun way to experiment with rich spices and wonderfully aromatic tastes, and even better it can be an excellent form of low fat vegetarian cooking, so has the added bonus of being good for the diet too.

Do not be intimidated by the thought of using herbs and spices you may not have come across before, trying new things and even getting it wrong, can be all part of the fun in vegetarian Indian cooking, and there are lots of books to give you all the information you might need.

Many root vegetables, such as potato, swede, parsnips etc, have a unique way of absorbing the spices in a way that meat and fish doesn t seem to and whilst you may have a favourite recipe, if you convert it to a vegetarian Indian cooking recipe the flavour may surprise you as it augments in the vegetables and seems some how more intense.

May of the recipes used in vegetarian Indian cooking are very traditional and have not been modified in any way, and the Indian cuisine is naturally high in vegetable content as many vegetables are readily available to the traditional Indian market, and by avoiding the cream based sauces you can stay low fat and healthy.

If you enjoy experimenting with vegetarian Indian cooking you may want to consider investing in a specific Indian cook book which will be loaded with new recipes and will challenge your cuisine skills and allow you to have a lot of fun experimenting, and provides a step by step guide to cooking the dish, many with helpful photos.

The Internet is also a very valuable source of vegetarian Indian cooking recipes, and lots of sites will give you tips about how to obtain and prepare the spices when you are nowhere near India! Using pre-powdered spices works well although to be traditional you would need to prepare your own.

Another great bonus of experimenting with vegetarian Indian cooking, is that you can adjust the strength of flavour to suit yourself, if you find one recipe too spicy simply cut down the amount of spices you add next time, until you find a strength that suits you.

Conversely if you find the flavours tasty yet a bit mild, why not try adding slightly more spices next time to increase the heat. It is worth leaning which spices add heat to vegetarian Indian cooking and which simply add flavour and depth!
